Tres Cantos Openlab team

Joël holds a master’s degree in Cell Biology and Immunology from the University of Toulouse (France) and completed a one-year specialization in Infectious Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier.

In 2007, he earned his PhD in Chemistry and Biology from the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), in collaboration with the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) and Sanofi.

Following a two-year postdoctoral tenure at the Laboratory of Malaria and Vector Research (LMVR) at the National Institute of Health (NIH, US), Joël transitioned to GSK (Tres Cantos, Madrid) as Principal Scientist. Initially part of the Malaria Unit, he later joined the Tuberculosis Unit in 2013, subsequent to obtaining an MBA from the “Instituto de Empresas (IE)”.

Since then, Joël has progressively assumed leadership roles, spearheading teams dedicated to discovering and developing novel treatments for infectious diseases.

Presently, he serves as the Head of External Collaborations in the Global Health Medicines R&D department.

Joël has overseen the development of European initiatives (AnTBiotic, Click-TB, ERA4TB...) aimed at fostering collaboration among pharmaceutical entities, academic partners, and small to medium-sized enterprises, facilitating the discovery, advancement, and development of new molecules.

With over a decade of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Joël has significantly contributed to building a robust portfolio of molecules. Many of these molecules are currently advancing into clinical phases, holding promise as potential future medicines.

Beatriz Cosme is Project Management Specialist in the Open Lab Team since 2011.

She coordinates and provides guidance on immigration, work permits, Health and Safety, Human Resources, grant invoicing and local accommodation requirements for the smooth implementation of Open Lab projects, including liaising with external consultants.

She joined GSK in 1999 and has experience in Business Development, Marketing, Human Resources, Procurement and, more recently, in R&D. As part of the R&D team, Beatriz worked in the Biology Department giving support to operational activities.

Beatriz has a degree in Psychology and two postgraduate courses, one on Psychology applied to Organizations, Univ. Oberta Cataluña and the other on Project Management, Univ. Alcalá de Henares.

Eugenia holds a PhD in Microbiology and Parasitology by Complutense University of Madrid and a Master´s degree in Public Health by European University. She started her career at GSK Global Health Medicines Unit in 2014. She initially worked in Molecular Biology to implement innovative tools for TB drug discovery and in the set-up of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) intracellular assays (PBMC- and iPSC-macrophages) in order to find new molecules targeting host-pathogen interactions.
In 2019, she got a sabbatical year to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which macrophages control Mtb infection at the Centre of Molecular Inflammation in Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Since 2020, she has worked as a scientific coordinator of external collaborations (ERA4TB, NACTAR and ITHEMYC) and currently as Program Lead of Tres Cantos Open Lab team.

With a Law degree and Master’s in European Studies from the Université Catholique de Louvain, coupled with a Postgraduate in Regional Strategy and Competitiveness, she possesses a strong academic background.

She specializes in managing international public-private projects within the health sector, particularly in legal matters, governance, and procedures.

Her broad experience at the European began with roles at the European Commission and later at the Managing Authority of various European Programs. From 2008 to 2014, she served as the Head of Fundraising and Institutional Cooperation at the Economic Promotion Agency of the City Council of Barcelona.

In 2014, she transitioned to the health sector as the Head of Business Development and Services at Synapse Research Management Partners, where she served until 2024. She joined GSK in early 2024 and is responsible for overseeing the contractual aspects of the Open Lab Projects, as well as handling other legal matters.

Alberto embarked on his journey with GSK Spain in 2012, later relocating to the UK where he dedicated the past decade to roles of increasing responsibility at GSK HQ in London. His expertise spans Finance Services, Controllership, and Finance Partnering.

Returning to GSK Spain in 2023, Alberto now serves as the Finance Partner for Global Health, providing invaluable financial support to the Foundation. Armed with a degree in Business Administration, Alberto brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his current role.

Ana Belén holds a BSc in Biology from the University of Granada and an MSc in research and diagnosis of tropical diseases from the University of la Laguna. In 2018, Ana Belén was awarded an Erasmus+ scholarship at the University of the West of Scotland (UK), where she investigated the effects of nano vibrations in Acanthamoeba Castellani and evaluated several compounds in this pathogen. Following this, in 2019, Ana Belén commenced work as a laboratory technician at the Institute of Infection, Immunity, and Inflammation, University of Glasgow, where she contributed to various malaria projects. During this tenure, Ana Belén developed a diverse skill set encompassing cell culture in Plasmodium falciparum, molecular biology, and lab management.

Ana Belén joined GSK in July 2022, assuming the role of providing transversal lab-based support to Tres Cantos Open Lab Foundation projects. This includes tasks such as mosquito microdissections, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry among others.
